5 Things You Should Know Before Your Trip to French Polynesia: Is Bora Bora Overrated?

French Polynesia’s vibrant beauty and pristine lagoons have made it a dream destination for travellers worldwide. But while Bora Bora often tops the list for honeymoons, is it truly the best choice? After visiting, I’ve discovered some surprising truths about Bora Bora and the hidden gems nearby. Here’s everything I wish I’d known before our trip to these paradise islands.

1. Bora Bora: Beautiful but Overrated?

Bora Bora is a name synonymous with luxury, but after experiencing it firsthand, I found it somewhat overrated. Yes, the views are postcard-perfect, and it’s an unforgettable experience if you’re a diver. But beyond the scenic resorts, the island feels heavily geared toward high-end tourism, with prices to match. The stunning nature and luxury come at a premium that doesn’t always feel worth it, especially when there are so many other islands in French Polynesia with unique character and natural beauty.

2. Moorea: The Hidden Gem Just a Ferry Ride Away

For those looking to experience the heart of French Polynesia without the ultra-luxury price tag, Moorea is the place to be. Just a quick ferry ride from Tahiti, Moorea has its own distinctive charm. Lush rainforests, deep cultural history, and gorgeous coral reefs make it an adventurer’s paradise. Moorea is also home to some of the world’s best vanilla—a local product that’s as rich in flavour as the landscape is in beauty.

3. Timing Matters: Picking the Perfect Season

French Polynesia has a tropical climate, and timing can make or break your visit. While December may conjure visions of balmy beaches, it’s actually the rainy season in French Polynesia. For the best chance of clear skies and calm seas, plan your trip for May/June or September/October. These shoulder months offer a sweet spot of pleasant weather and fewer tourists, letting you experience the islands at their best.

4. Exploring the Islands by Cruise

If you’re looking to explore more than just one island, consider a cruise that lets you see multiple destinations within French Polynesia. For example, itineraries that stop at Moorea, Rangiroa, Raiatea, and the remote Marquesas Islands. This option allows you to sample the distinct personality of each island—from the coral reefs of Rangiroa to the mystique of the Marquesas—without the hassle of constant travel arrangements.

5. Overwater Bungalows: They’re Worth the Hype

An overwater bungalow in French Polynesia might seem like a travel cliché, but believe me, it’s one you’ll want to experience at least once. There’s something magical about waking up to the sound of the water beneath you, with views of the ocean stretching endlessly from your private deck. Whether you stay in Bora Bora or another island, this bucket-list accommodation is as surreal and beautiful as you imagine.

Final Thoughts: Is French Polynesia Worth It?

While Bora Bora may not be everyone’s perfect destination, French Polynesia as a whole is nothing short of extraordinary. With a little planning and the right choices, you can discover islands that feel both exotic and untouched. So whether it’s a honeymoon or a once-in-a-lifetime getaway, French Polynesia’s unique blend of culture, natural beauty, and island charm make it well worth the trip.
